It is a branch of dentistry that deals with diagnosing, preventing, and correcting dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontic treatment involves using wires, braces, and other options to straighten teeth. It also helps to improve dental and facial aesthetics and correct bite problems.
No, braces can be uncomfortable, but they should not be painful. Most people experience discomfort or soreness for the first few days after the braces are placed and after each adjustment appointment. The dentist may prescribe over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen, to reduce any discomfort.
Orthodontic procedure time varies depending on the severity of the dental and Orthodontic issues. For traditional metal braces, the average treatment time is two to three years, but in some cases, it may take longer or shorter.
Different braces are available, including traditional metal, lingual, ceramic, and clear aligners. The most common and most affordable option is traditional metal braces. Like metal braces, ceramic braces have the same function. Still, their brackets are made from tooth-coloured material, making them less noticeable. Lingual braces are invisible to the naked eye as they are placed on the back of the teeth. Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are the most popular ones. These are clear plastic trays that gradually move to align the teeth.
You will need to see the Orthodontist every four to six weeks for adjustments during the orthodontic treatment. These appointments are necessary to ensure the braces are working correctly and make any necessary adjustments.
You need to wear a retainer; it is crucial to maintain the Orthodontic treatment results. The teeth naturally shift back to their original positions after removing the braces. A retainer holds the teeth in their new position until they become more stable. The Orthodontist will help you with how often and how long you should wear the retainer.
You may need to adjust your daily activities during Orthodontic treatment, especially in the first few days after placing the braces. The dentist may tell you to avoid hard or sticky foods and spend extra time caring for your teeth and braces. However, during Orthodontic treatment, most people can continue their daily activities, such as playing musical instruments and sports.
After braces are placed or adjusted, it is common to experience some changes in speech during the first few days. Slight slip or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds is common. However, most people quickly adjust to the braces and their speech returns to normal within a few days.
The type of braces used and the duration of treatment can determine the cost of Orthodontic treatment. Most people prefer traditional metal braces, which are the most affordable option. However, clear aligners are the most expensive ones. Many Orthodontic clinics offer payment plans and financing options to make treatment more affordable.
